Summary
Advice and notes from London merchant Thomas Stile to his apprentice Robert Dering, on the occasion of Dering going abroad for business. In 6 numbered points, Stile charges Dering to remember the importance of prayer ("serffe god morninge and eveffninge and then I doubt not but he will pros[per] all you shall take in hand"), to "take heed of kepping of Bad Companye" and in idle moments instead "aplye yo[u]r selffe to wryttinge, seyfferinge, & Redinge of good Bookes," to follow the directives of "Mr. Wm. Collpe[per]" (warning that he has "geuen him order that if he ether see or here any bad behaueyor or mysdemer by you that presenthe he shall shipe you home ffor England"), to "learne the lanngwedge" (presumably German) and improve his writing so as best to assist in Stiles' business affairs, to provide accounts of spending of the 40 shillings he gives to defray Dering's charges, and to write to Stile "so often as you Can and ffrom all plasses wheare you may have Convayanse."
