Baltimore teacher Amber Phelps describes how she would use Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice' in an American Literature unit. For more teaching resources visit www.folger.edu/education
one play that I would love to teach
is the Merchant of Venice just because
we're plagued with this question as
teachers what do we teach during
American literature what Shakespearean
play can we teach their American
literature and I think some schools
either tried to leave it absent of
Shakespeare or sometime try to make
something work so sometimes Julius
Caesar is often used and sometimes
that's kind of a hard sell so one play
that I would love to teach during
American literature particularly is the
Merchant of Venice because there are so
many things that you can discuss and if
you're thinking about an American
literature as a means to examine how
Outsiders achieve the American dream and
Outsiders being non-normative people of
non-normative genders races and classes
you most certainly can use a merchant of
venice as a mean to examine those
barriers that are posed to these
outsiders
