Artist: Another item which is part of the same collection depicts the same view of the Globe, but in watercolor, and is signed by George Shepherd and dated 1809 (ART Inv. 271 no. 2d). Shepherd was known to have worked on Londina illustrata (see history section of this entry), and may be the artist of this wash as well History: Sketch is pasted below an engraving of the same design which bears the imprint London : R. Wilkinson, 1810 (ART Inv. 271, no. 1b). The engraving was published as an illustration to Wilkinson's Londina illustrata and lacks artist or engraver's name. The print was "enlarged from an engraved view of London made about the year 1612." The print includes more detail than the drawing and the figures pictured on the street in the print are missing from the drawing. (FSL has other copies of the engraving in ART File as well as a copy of the printed book) Provenance: Item is in a collection of engravings, original drawings, newspaper clippings and ms. notes concerning the early London theaters. The collection was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros., April, 1925.
