Artist: Identification from signature and bookseller. Thomson was a noted watercolor artist and illustrator. He illustrated the works of Austen, Burney and J. M. Barrie, among others, and contributed illustrations to The graphic, Black and white, and other illustrated magazines of his day
History: Drawings were used to illustrate a gift book edition of As you like it which was published by Hodder & Stoughton. The imprint does not bear a date and bibliographic sources have dated it variously 1909 and 1910. The volume was printed with 40 three-color process prints, 33 of which are represented in this collection. The watercolors were exhibited in 1910 at the Leicester Galleries, London. A copy of the printed edition may be found in the FSL collection (PR 2803 A44 Sh.Col.)
Items are mainly executed in watercolor with outlinings in ink or pencil and highlights in what appears to be colored pastel or crayon. Twenty of the 33 items are signed and all are labeled as to act and scene with the line from the play which they illustrate. Many have numbers noted on the back. Avg. 15 x 9 1/2 in
Provenance: The drawings were obtained by the Folgers in two separate purchases. Thirty of the drawings were bought from Maggs Bros. in March of 1927 (formerly ART Inv. 292 Case 1661). The additional 3 items were purchased in July of 1929, also from Maggs Bros (formerly ART Box T482 no.1-3 Case 1930). Items have been microfilmed on reel 2 of Film Fo. 2659
