History: Drawings were designed as illustrations to a gift book edition of Merry wives of Windsor which was published by William Heineman in 1910. The volume was printed with 40 illustrations which were reproduced as three-color process prints and inserted to the printed work on mounts. Thirty three of the 40 published illustrations are represented in this collection. The original watercolors were exhibited in 1910 at the Leicester Galleries, London. FSL has 2 copies of the printed work, one being the deluxe edition bearing the signature of Thomson (PR 2826 1910b-1 Sh.Col. & PR 2826 1910b-2 Sh.Col.)
Items are mainly executed in watercolor with pen and ink outlinings. Some are highlighted or detailed in pencil. Printer's notes are found in pencil on the back of each item, along with identification of the act and scene which the drawing illustrates. Of the 33, 17 are signed and dated 1910. Avg. 15 x 9 1/2 in
Provenance: Thirty of the watercolors were purchased as a collection, by the Folgers, from Maggs Bros, in March of 1927 (Cs. 1661). One of the watercolors was bought of Maggs in July of 1929, along with watercolor illustrations for As you like it (ART Box T482 no.42 - Cs. 1930). The other two watercolors were bought from Parsons in 1930 (no.35,52 - Cs. 2007). Formerly ART Inv. 298 & ART Box T482 no.4-6. Items have been microfilmed on reel 2 of Film Fo. 2659
