General notes
Anonymous. By Thomas Wagstaffe. Cf. Madan, 175 The words "Eikōn basilikē in line 10 of title are in Greek characters A reply to the memorandum by Anglesey and to "A true account of the author of a book entituled Eikōn basilikē" by Anthony Walker (Wing W310) The Anglesey memorandum, which supports the claim that John Gauden, and not Charles I, was the author of the "Eikōn", was printed on a singleton and added to some copies of the Amsterdam edition of John Milton's "Eikonoklastēs" (Wing M2115) Includes a bibliography of the editions of "Eikōn basilikē" published between 1648 and 1685 compiled by Samuel Keble. Cf. Madan, 153 Running title reads: A vindication of King Charles I. &c Also issued as part of P1595 Leaf C8 is cancelled. It bears a general title page for the 1693 collected edition of Richard Perrinchief's "The life and death of King Charles the First" (3rd ed. 1684), "Eikōn basilikē" (1685), and Wagstaffe's "Vindication" (1st ed. 1693). Apparently Hindmarsh acquired the unsold copies of the "Royal martyr" and "Eikōn" on the death of Royston and used this general title page, with title "The life and death of King Charles the First" for a reissue of those two works in combination with the second edition of his own "Vindication". Cf. Madan, 67, second issue, and Wing P1595
