Whitman introduces himself a "lad of fourteen years who lived at Calvin Dimmicks in Cambridge during the winter of 1855 or 1856." He recalls that Winter used to come there to visit and mentions his acquaintance with the Alcott family. He asks Winter to assist and advise his son, John Pratt Whitman, who works on the stage.
