Thomas Windeat has not been identified with certainty, but he was likely from a family of non-conformists in Devon The volume was written from both directions: text written front to back and, with volume turned upside-down, written from back to front. Some sections include text in both orientations on either side of the same leaf (leaves 17-32, 95-102) Inscribed "Thomas Windeat" multiple times throughout volume, some dated: "Thomas Windeat His Book Amen Anno Adominy 1695 Thom," "Thomas Windeat His Book Amen Anno dominy 1695 Bought The 21 Day" (leaves [i-ii]) and "Thomas Windeat his book Amen And his writing on [th]e 26 of may In [th]e year 1701" (leaf 33).
