Collection of hymns ("Hear are spritaull hems song by Mr John Galfin The elder" (leaf 1)), spiritual questions and answers and other religious writings. Much of the volume written in shorthand (leaves 30-17, in reverse direction, and leaves 35-103). The volume also contains notes that serve as a shorthand manual, including sections taken directly from Thomas Shelton's Tachygraphy (leaves 108-94, in reverse direction), as well as common religious phrases (leaves 34-32, in reverse direction)

General notes

Thomas Windeat has not been identified with certainty, but he was likely from a family of non-conformists in Devon The volume was written from both directions: text written front to back and, with volume turned upside-down, written from back to front. Some sections include text in both orientations on either side of the same leaf (leaves 17-32, 95-102) Inscribed "Thomas Windeat" multiple times throughout volume, some dated: "Thomas Windeat His Book Amen Anno Adominy 1695 Thom," "Thomas Windeat His Book Amen Anno dominy 1695 Bought The 21 Day" (leaves [i-ii]) and "Thomas Windeat his book Amen And his writing on [th]e 26 of may In [th]e year 1701" (leaf 33). Additional names of family members on leaf 106v: "Joan Windeat" and "Susanna Windeat." Limp vellum binding, with remains of original sheepskin ties Acquired from Samuel Gedge, 2012-10-31
