In pencil in lower left corner of item recto: 'Wright', in center on the bottom margin: 'Lear' (clipped). Item is unfinished. The ink has been applied with a cross hatching technique. Play title is also labeled on the backing
Provenance: Item is part of a collection of 122 Shakespearean watercolors, most of which are attributed to Wright. The collection was purchased from a private owner by 'Sabin' ca. 1898 and sold to the Folgers by Gabriel Wells, April 28, 1920 (formerly ART Inventory 289 no.38 - Cs. 889)
Subject: Drawing portrays the death of Lear. Lear is shown on the ground, slightly right of center with Cordelia dead on his lap. Five men are standing over him, probably Edgar, Kent, Albany and two soldiers (Act V, Sc. 3)
