Collection title devised by cataloger
Provenance: ART Box W951 no.143, 144 were purchased by the Folgers from Alfred Sedgwick an Essex bookseller, on the 21st of February, 1927 (Case 1683). ART Box W951 no.145 was purchased from E. Parsons & Sons, March, 1930 (Case 2046)
Subject: Two of the items are finished watercolors illustrating Act III, Sc. 1 of Much ado. In both Beatrice is pictured behind a tree listening to Hero and Ursula. The first (ART Box W951 no.143) is slightly less finished than the other (ART Box W951 no.145). ART Box W951 no.144 is not a finished work but rather two studies for the same or a similar scene, the characters being in different positions. There is a fold to the left of center in the paper on which the studies were executed, perhaps indicating that the item was once part of a sketch book
No.145 is signed, bottom left, on the picture's surface, "J.M. Wright." The other two items are unsigned
