Artist: Identification is taken from booksellers and from the signature in the lower right corner of the third item
The first item once had penciled writing on its bottom margin but it has been clipped and only the very tops of the letters are now visible. Drawings do not seem to be completely finished. The first two items measure 5 7/8 x 4 3/4 in. and 6 5/8 x 4 1/2 in. and neither are signed. The third item measures 10 5/16 x 7 3/8 in. and is signed in pencil in the lower right corner
Provenance: ART Box W951 no.160-162 were formerly part of ART Inventory 289 (no.96,97,112), a collection of 122 Shakespearean watercolors most of which are attributed to Wright. For provenance information see entry under Wright for 'Masquerade'
Subject: Drawings are not labeled with act and scene divisions. The first item pictures Titania raised slightly above ten or so fairies who are dancing (ART Box W951 no.160). The second item shows Titania floating in mid-air with Puck dancing above her. Bottom is pictured back left, wearing the ass head, and a woman or fairy is seated, with her back turned to the viewer, in the bottom left corner (ART Box W951 no.161). The third drawing has Titania and Oberon in the center with fairies around them. Bottom is seated in the lower left corner and Puck is dancing above his head (ART Box W951 no.162). No.160 and no.162 also have additional sketches on the reverse; no.160 a pen and ink wash sketch of a reclining woman (Titania?) surrounded by dancing figures, and no.162 a rough pencil sketch of a seated man and woman holding hands with many figures standing behind them
