Artist: Identification is taken from ink labels on the former backings
Items have been removed from backings which had brown ink labels beneath them, written in a neat italic script, underneath at the right the artist's name 'J.M. Wright' and 1/2 inch below that, centered underneath the picture are the words 'From the Tempest'. On the back of the drawings, each has written in ink "The Tempest" and "Wright" (with three lower case illegible letters following the name). Items measure approximately 2 3/8 x 3 5/8 in. and neither is signed
Provenance: These two drawings were glued to boards which had been cut away from larger boards containing watercolors of scenes from Henry VIII and Troilus and Cressida (see ART Box W951 no.89,90). Items are listed in case 1521 and were purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. in March of 1926
Subject: ART Box W951 no.174 pictures Miranda on the arm of Prospero at the center with Caliban, Trinculo and Stephano at left and Ferdinand and Ariel at right. Bookseller describes item as Act I, Sc. 2 of The tempest though it is more likely Act IV, Sc. 1. ART Box W951 no.173 is described by the bookseller as 'The tempest, Act IV, Sc. 1, Ferdinand standing, with spirits, nymphs etc in forest scene.' Drawing shows a man wearing a crown and holding a staff, standing center with a girl on his arm. Two couples are shown at left and a boy with a horn and three dogs stands at right. In the sky at right are floating figures and other figures can be seen in the background at left. Drawing undoubtedly represents Midsummer night's dream rather than The tempest
