General notes
Artist: Style of the drawing and the features of the face of Pistol indicate a resemblance to the work of Robert Smirke but are more closely related to the work of John Massey Wright imitating Smirke. The watercolor technique and coloring used here is similar to the style of painting found in the Wright series 'Illustration to Shakespeare - small vignettes'. Artist attribution is concluded from this resemblance History: The costuming and figure portrayal is identical to a watercolor cataloged with a group of drawings by Wright under the title 'Drawings in the fashion of Robert Smirke' (ART Box W951 no.13). The coloring varies greatly, as well as the positioning and size, the art box item being much larger Left side of the picture is incomplete. Drawing is inlaid to a larger sheet which bears a pencil note giving the act and scene. Unsigned Provenance: Item is inlaid in volume 10 of a 21 volume extra-illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer Subject: Drawing pictures Fluellen forcing Pistol to eat the leek. Pistol is seated on the ground at center, holding the leek in his right hand. Fluellen is standing at left leaning over him. His figure is not completely drawn or colored in. Another figure, probably Gower, is pictured in uniform, standing at right, behind Pistol This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
