Manuscript motto (from old endpapers?) affixed to front paste-down, minus interspersed letters decodes as: "No life to lechery: No death to beggary:". Re-bound at Folger (from old calf) in December 1960, in half goatskin over cloth; note on the conservation bound in at back. Provenance: Hume family library (fragment of old calf binding affixed to back paste-down with initials: SPH [Sir Patrick Hume]); inscribed on t.p.: "Hume of Polwart / Omne tulit punctumQui Meruit utile dulci"; armorial bookplate of Alexander Hume, Lord Polwarth, dated 1721 (mottoes: Fides probata coronat; True to the end); bookplate of Wm. [William] Hardcastle; Harmsworth copy
