History: The central sketch is a preliminary design for a plate to 'Windsor Castle' a short historical romance by W. Harrison Ainsworth which was published in serial in Ainsworth's Magazine, 1842-1843. The work was later published separately, in 1844. The plate is no.1 of the 14 illustrations Cruikshank designed for the work. The plate was titled 'Henry's Reconcilliation with Anne Boleyn' and is listed as no.2177 in Reid's Catalogue of Cruikshank's Work. The imprint on the plate reads: London, published by Cunningham and Mortimer, 1842. (FSL has a clipped copy of engraving in DA 690 N6 M2 Ex.ill. vol.1)
Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from the sale of the collection of Samuel Henry Austin, held by the American Art Association, April 23-24, 1917. According to the catalog of the sale, the item was originally part of a bound volume of Cruikshank drawings, formerly owned by John B. Gough and purchased, by Austin, from the collection of C.D. Borden. Drawing was no.292 in the catalog of the Austin Collection
Published Work: Ainsworth's magazine: a miscellany of romance. Edited by William Harrison Ainsworth ; illustrated by George Cruikshank. Vol.2. London : Cunningham & Mortimer, 1842
Subject: The central sketch shows Henry, holding Anne's hand, as they appear in the finished etching. The margin sketches seem to depict Henry in various other poses, speaking with a woman. On the right margin are sketches of three heads which appear to be 19th century figurines
Title taken from note, in Cruikshank's hand, at top of drawing. Item has one central sketch and numerous sketches in the margins. The majority of the sketches are in pencil, but three of the margin sketches have been outlined in ink and the skirt of one of the central figures has been touched with a bit of color wash. Item is signed, in ink, underneath the central figures and has been inlaid to a folio size sheet of paper
