Artist: De Grey assumed the 2nd baronetage in May of 1833 and changed his surname. His mother was the 2nd daughter of the 2nd earl of Hardwicke and so De Grey was probably in some way related to the author of this published work which he illuminated. De Grey is not listed in art references sources but is known to have had artistic sympathies, having been the 1st president of the Institution of British Architects Painting has been done on the pages of a printed book. Most of the work is in the nature of border designs, however there are a few pages which vary. Two are complete watercolor pictures painted over the printed text, one is row of sketches for scene settings which may have been used as the sets for a production of the play which this volume contains. There is also one pencil sketch of a character. The works are not signed however there is a credit page on which is painted 'Illuminated by Thomas Philip Lord Grantham' Provenance: The illuminated volume is Elizabeth, countess of Hardwicke's. 'The court of Oberon, or The three wishes', a second printing, done for a bazaar to aid the Irish cause in 1831. The book includes a playbill for a production of the work. The book was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. in Oct., 1923 This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
