This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance Half length portrait, to left, looking front, right hand resting on chest. Title from penciled note underneath which continues: 'from the picture in Dulwich College'. Unsigned Artist: Drawing is similar to a print by Silvester Harding (see below) and a penciled note on the flyleaf of the volume which houses the drawing credits Harding as artist of some of the works inside History: Drawing is similar to a stipple engraving of Field published in Harding's Shakespeare illustrated. Harv. cat. of dram. ports. lists the engraving as no.1 under the entry for Field. FSL copy of the engraving is ART File F455 no.1,2. Harding's work was reprinted several times so publishing dates vary. The engraving listed in Harvard is dated 1790, yet the first edition of Shakespeare illustrated listed in NUC and BMC is the 1793 edition. Possibly the plates were issued separately, or published in another work. The FSL Art File copy is also dated 1790 Subject: Field was an actor, listed in the 1623 First folio as having performed in Shakespeare's plays. He is listed variously as Nathan, Nat. and Nathaniel and is often credited as being the 16th century dramatist Nathaniel Field as well. Harv. gives him the dates 1587-1633 and the full name of Nathaniel. FSL main and art file follow the LC entry Field, Nathan 1587-1620? Provenance: For information on volume and prov. see record for Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer Published work: Harding, Silvester. Shakespeare illustrated ... London: S&E Harding, 1793
