General notes
The identity of this John Harte is uncertain. In the list of subscribers to the Poems, a note in the same hand identifies an earlier "John Harte" as "my Uncle who had disposed of every atom of our Great Poets." The handwriting of John Harte bears little resemblance to that of John Hart, 1755-1800 (cf. W.a.62) Note on his having been given "our great poets Bible" by William Oldys. The Poem was given him by his father, Thomas Hart, along with many items which had belonged to his noble ancestor, Joan Shakespeare. Thomas Hart (1729-93) was supposed to have disposed of relics in birthplace to his tenants, the Hornsby's in 1793 (& 1795?). See Y.d.83; Shakespeare Survey I (1948), 79; W.a.62. 2 other marg. notes on p. xxvi- xxvii On verso of end flyleaf of Poems on several occasions, by Walter Harte, 1727
