General notes

Artist: Mrs. Jameson has been credited with designing the vignettes which were etched for illustration to her work The characteristics of women. The sketches are unsigned (but for the one signed by Hayter) as are the engravings. The Folger has a volume with sketches by Hayter (ART Vol. d2), one of which appears to be a sketch for an engraving, used in Jameson's work, of Juliet leaning over the body of Romeo. Hayter's series of sketches for his work on Fanny Kemble as Juliet was accompanied by text by Mrs. Jameson. It is highly likely that Hayter was responsible for some of the designs for Characteristics of women. The one design that is signed by Hayter, however, is reproduced in a later American edition of the work with the signature of Mrs. Jameson upon it Drawings are tipped into an edition of the work along with proofs of the resulting etchings. One of the items is dated 1832 and signed John Hayter History: Sketches were drawn as designs for engravings which illustrated Jameson's second edition of Characteristics of women. I have been unable to look at the first edition of the work and so do not know if the same designs were used. Some of these designs were, however, used again in later editions. In the case of the American edition the signature 'Anna' was added to them. The work was previously published under the title Shakespeare's heroines.
