Notes
General notes
"Publish'd as the Act Directs Decem.r 1773 by J. Saunders no. 17 Glanville Street Rathbone Place." Another note on the mat indentifies the actor as "Alex Johnston." Highfill notes that John Johnston is often confused with Alexander Johnston, the housekeeper of Drury Lane. Highfill writes: "The catalogues of the engraved portraits in the Harvard Theatre Collection and the British Museum identify the sitter as 'Alexander Jonston,' but the plate states simply 'Mr. Jonston.'...we find no evidence to confirm that identification, and during his lilfetime no mention seems to have been made of the housekeeper's acting..." Note on mat indicates this is "proof before the title, & with the early publication line
