Artist: These two watercolors have been grouped together due to similarity in style, coloring, shading, and subject matter. There are no signatures nor any evidence as to who the artist may have been. The style is primitive and simplistic, yet well executed Provenance: Items have been added to an extra-illustrated copy of Mackenzie's Newcastle-upon-Tyne. For volume and provenance information see main entry for "Anonymous. Newcastle eccentrics." Subject: The first item is labeled "A charity girl, St. Andrew's Parish, Newcastle-upon-Tyne," and shows a 3/4 length portrait of a young school girl standing, faced front. Her head is down, looking at a chalk board which she holds in her left arm and her right hand holds a writing instrument to her lips. She wears a cap and apron. The second item is a full length portrait of a young boy and girl, pictured profile, walking arm in arm alongside a brick wall. They are dressed in 18th century costume, the girl wearing a bonnet and the boy a tri-cornered hat. If the picture corresponds to the printed text, the children are probably meant to be on their way to Sunday school This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance Title is devised, the first item being labeled, the second having no label. Both watercolors have been glued to larger sheets of paper. Unsigned
