General notes
Text on verso of portraits Illustrations: 126 full-page engravings, all presumably by Dominic Custos after Giovanni Battista Fontana, comprising allegorical frontispiece (which includes arms and portrait bust of Archduke Ferdinand, and which is signed by Fontana and Custos) and 125 portraits of men in armor. The title page and most of the text pages have the same woodcut historiated border. Each portrait has a different historiated border with a tablet for a legend at the foot. Tablets are vacant on most portraits. Plates are unnumbered and the order of plates appears to vary among different copies, as does the number and selection of text pages with one of several engraved (as opposed to woodcut) historiated borders, and the number and selection of plates with engraved legends. Frontispiece dated 1582. Plate depicting Iohannes Medices Florentinus dated 1586. Plates depicting Ianus Maria Fregosius Genuensis and Sigismundus Pandulphus Malatesta both dated 1595 Cf. Lipperheide, F. Kat. der Kostümbibliothek, 499 Portions of 222- 718[2d]b also available as a digital reproduction
