General notes
Variant state of ESTC R7161 and Keynes 46, with different title page ("armigeri" is spelled out), and some differences in setting of the preliminaries, including lack of errata on leaf a4r, the last page of the Praefatio ad lectorem. This state has plates numbered M1-6 and S1-21 (instead of M1-5 and S1-22; see Keynes.) With an added engraved title page: "Francisci Willoughby Icthyographia ad amplissimum virum Dnum. Samuelem Pepys ... . Sumptibus Societatis Regalis Londonensis, 1685," lettered: "Paul van Somer jnuent et fecit Londini." It's frequently bound immediately preceding the plates Plates consist of the engraved title page and [187] full-page images of fishes, numbered by letter and number; the majority are inscribed with the names of the subscribers who paid for them, with 79 credited to Samuel Pepys. See Keynes for exact numbering sequences. Images appear on both rectos and versos of plates, and the final four plates have the contributors' names engraved; none of the illustrations are signed with artists' or engravers' names Signatures: a⁴ A-2V⁴, ²A-L² Not in Keynes, G. John Ray, 1976; compare item 46. Wing does not differentiate the variants "Appendix ad historiam naturalem piscium" (caption title) has separate pagination and register Includes errata leaf (²H2) and index
