Collection title devised by cataloger
Items have been removed from mats which were labeled in pencil with artist, play title, act and scene division and characters portrayed. The first item measures 9 7/8 x 7 7/8 in. and has some egg glare highlights on its surface. The second item measures 8 1/2 x 10 in. Neither item is signed
History: FSL has two small rough sketches and a small finished watercolor which represent the same scene as the second watercolor noted here. The smaller versions are also attributed to Wright. The major variation between the large watercolor and the three small items is in the costuming of the characters (see ART Box W951 no.123, 124 for rough sketches and ART Box W951 no.74 for finished watercolor - cataloged under Wright, headings for 'Rough or unfinished drawings ...' and 'Illustrations to Shakespeare - small rectangle series')
Provenance: ART Box W951 no.167 was purchased by the Folgers from E. Parsons and Sons in 1929. It was placed in storage on Nov. 16 of that year (Case 1953). ART Box W951 no.168 was formerly part of ART Inventory 286 (no.16). For provenance information see entry under Wright for 'Comedy and tragedy'
Subject: The first item (ART Box W951 no.167) was labeled on its mat: Act II, Sc. 1, Katherina, Bianca & Baptista. Baptista stands center with his arm out to left, holding back Katherina who stands left of him in a purple gown and a black hat. Bianca stands right of Baptista, her back to the viewer and her head turned to the left. She is wearing a pink gown. The second item (ART Box W951 no.168) was labeled on its mat: Act IV, Sc. 3 - Katherina and Grumio, 'Go, get thee gone, Thou false deluding slave'. Katherina is pictured standing right of center with her right arm raised above the head of cowering Grumio. Two men are visible in the doorway back left
